The challenge:

The Nook is a place where new memories are made, but they are rooted in the timeless enjoyment of a good cup of coffee — familiar, comforting, and always reliable.

The brand sought to become more than just a coffee shop; it aimed to be a place where people can disconnect from their busy lives, find inspiration, and create lasting memories. The brand needed to convey a sense of comfort, warmth, and community, while embracing the modern needs of today’s customers: a space that blends the timeless charm of a neighborhood café with a fresh, contemporary design. As The Nook positions itself as a destination led by coffee makers and bakery experts, the challenge was also to highlight their dedication to craftsmanship — providing expertly brewed coffee and artisanal baked goods that elevate the experience for every customer.

The challenge was twofold: first, to encapsulate the feeling of a welcoming space where people could enjoy a cup of coffee in an environment designed for relaxation, creativity, and connection; second, to ensure that this identity was expressed in a way that was not only visually inviting but also timeless, modern, and simple. In an era where coffee culture often shifts towards trendy, fast-paced aesthetics, The Nook needed a brand that would stand out by focusing on the authenticity of human moments and the expertise behind every cup of coffee

The branding concept for The Nook was developed around a central idea: “everything that makes people happy about going to a small space to enjoy a coffee.”

The solution:

To capture this feeling of happiness, comfort, and calm, the visual solution was built around illustrations that depict everyday moments,  creating in the costumers an emotional connection to the brand. Every visual element seeks to convey warmth, tranquility, and a sense of belonging.

The concept of “less is more” was carefully applied throughout the brand’s visual identity, allowing each element to breathe and speak for itself. By reducing unnecessary visual clutter, the design draws attention to what truly matters: the essence of the experience and the emotions it evokes.

By stripping away unnecessary details, the illustrations deliver a more profound emotional impact. In this space of minimalism, the viewer is invited to project their own feelings and experiences onto the scene. These hand-drawn illustrations were carefully crafted reduced to their essence, allowing their expressions, body language, and environment to convey the emotion of the scene. This approach ensures that the illustrations feel authentic and evoke a deep emotional response with minimal detail.

The second part of the solution was focused on the careful selection of color, typography and messaging that would both capture and communicate the essence of The Nook

With black and white as the dominant color palette, the use of soft pastel accents — a gentle pink and a calming sky blue — introduces a subtle vibrancy to the design, echoing the warmth and tranquility of the space. These muted tones serve as delicate nods to the brand’s core attributes

The messaging strategy was designed to echo The Nook‘s core values: simplicity, connection, and comfort. Every piece of text, whether on the menu, signage, or promotional material, reflects the core concept encouraging customers to embrace moments. The typography fosters an atmosphere of trust and comfort,

For the brand’s visual language, I chose a typeface that strikes a delicate balance between nostalgia and contemporary appeal. The typography conveys warmth and approachability, drawing customers in with its inviting nature, while its modern characteristics ensure it remains relevant and fresh.

The logo, with its pure typographic form, reinforces the brand’s minimalist aesthetic. By deliberately avoiding additional icons or complex graphic elements, I chose to focus solely on the name The Nook, allowing the typography to be the centerpiece of the identity. This approach not only ensures clarity but also strengthens brand recognition by making the name itself instantly memorable.
